Health Minister Maithripala Sirisena says that food insecurity was one of the causes of malnutrition.
Sirisena observes that attention should be focused on designing and implementing solutions to increase the availability and affordability of nutritious foods.
Speaking during a public event in Colombo, the Minister has noted that the government has initiated production programmes to address the food security for those below the poverty line and food safety programmes for consumers.
According to Sirisena, the availability of healthy food and the ability to access nutritious food resulted in the improved levels of nutrition among people.
Sri Lankadeclared the first Nutrition Policy in 1986, and later scaled it up in 2008 with a revision to take place in 10 years.
