Aug 13, 2011 3:26:18 AM - thesundayleader.lk

Child Development and Women’s Affairs Minister Tissa Karaliyedda says the government has identified over 59,000 war widows in the North and East Provinces following the end of the war.

Karaliyedda has said there are 42,565 war widows in the East and 16,936 in the North.

He has said that all the identified women may not have been widowed by the war, but from other causes as well.

However, Karaliyedda has observed that several government ministries had launched various programmes including counseling programmes to support these women in the North and East.

Among the ministries that have launched programmes for these women are the Economic Development Ministry, Social Services Ministry, Resettlement and Rehabilitation Ministry and Child Development and Women’s Affairs Ministry.
