Commercial Credit PLC Chairman Mrs. Vagdevi Fernando was recently presented with an award by “Sthree Mela” (Voice of Sri Lankan Women (VSW)) in recognition of her outstanding contribution to Sri Lanka’s financial services industry.
Central Province Governor Tikiri Kobbekaduwa presented the award to Fernando at a well patronised event at the Kandy City Centre and organised by VSW which is headed by Mrs. Visakha Dharmadasa in Kandy.
Other awardees at this event were Mrs. Lalitha Dissanayake (Public Services), Mrs. Jean Arasanayagam (English Literature), Mrs. Pearl
Stevens (Social Service), Mrs. Ena de Silva (Batiks) and Mrs. Chandra Ranaraja (Kandy’s first woman mayor).
Speaking on behalf of the awardees, Fernando said that she was happy that women are finally being recognised for the work they do for society. “It is difficult for women to enter into a man’s world. But now with the formation of these associations, women could now forge ahead. This reception is proof that women are being recognised.” She thanked everyone for their participation and wished the Association VSW the best.
This event is part of numerous district level celebrations of Sri Lankan women’s achievements organised by VSW. It will culminate in a
celebration at the BMICH in Colombo in December under the theme “The Story of Sri Lankan Women-Regional to National to International levels”.
Fernando has been at Commercial Credit’s helm for the past 23 years and steered the Company to greater heights during this period with her keen business acumen. A relatively new entrant into the financial services industry, the Company’s rapid turnaround to become one of the most notable success stories in recent history has garnered it the industry’s trust, recognition and respect. Relentless in its pursuance of excellence, a rapidly growing customer base and an increasing business portfolio have seen Commercial Credit embark on a strategic but fast-paced expansion programme.
