Two Five Points beating suspects to have preliminary hearing

Aug 15, 2011 11:11:00 PM - thestate.com
Two of the eight youths arrested after the Five Points savage beating of 18-year-old Carter Strange will have preliminary hearings on Sept. 23, a spokeswoman for the 5th Circuit Solicitor’s office said Monday.

At the preliminary hearings, before a magistrate, prosecutors will present key evidence in the case and be subject to questions by defense attorneys. The magistrate will then rule on whether the case will go to the grand jury.

The suspects who will appear at the preliminary hearing are Tyheem Henrey, 19, and Yahquann Gantt, 18. Henrey is charged with assault and battery by mob, robbery and conspiracy. Gantt is charged with assaulting Strange “by punching and kicking him repeatedly causing serious life threatening injuries to victim.”

In a related development, a Family Court judge last week ordered five juveniles arrested in connection with Strange’s beating to be detained in a local jail for another month. Another hearing will be held Sept. 21 to determine whether they should be released or kept in jail.

A 13-year-old juvenile arrested in the case was released earlier and is in custody of his parents.
