A private sector trade union has called on the government to take measures to gazette the increased cost of living allowance to the private and semi-government sectors.
The JVP affiliated Inter Company Employees Union (ICEU) has threatened to launch a series of protest campaigns from September 1 if authorities fail to gazette the cost of living allowance for the private and semi government sectors that was increased to Rs. 280.
ICEU Head Wasantha Samarasinghe said the private sector employees received only Rs. 180 as a cost of living allowance due to the government’s failure to gazette the increased amount.
He observes that the union has planned to hold an island wide poster campaign and to distribute leaflets among people to educate them on the cost of living allowance for the private sector that contributes immensely to the country’s economy.
He said the ICEU would also hold a poster campaign on a human wall on August 22, since the posters put up by the unions are always removed by the police.
Samarasinghe added that the workers did not have faith in the government, as it has failed to address their issues and provide any relief to them.
