The UNP’s pro-reforms today called on all party members and supporters to participate in a sathyagraha campaign that is to be held outside the party headquarters, Sirikotha tomorrow.
Pro-reformist, parliamentarian Ranjith Madduma Bandara told a press conference that the sathyagraha would be held at 2 p.m. outside Sirikotha.
Madduma Bandara said the sathyagraha was the first step in bringing victory to the party.
He added that unity within the party was essential and deputy leader Karu Jayasuriya is the person ca[able of uniting the party.
The pro-reformists have called on UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe to remain as the Opposition Leader, but step down from the party leadership making way for Jayasuriya to take the post.
According to Madduma Bandara, the posts of party leader and the Opposition Leader did not have to be held by one person.
He explained that the late J.R. Jayewardene served as the Opposition leader when the late D.S. Senanayake held the post of party leader in 1970.
