Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa has said that the Rajapaksas for 75 years met the aspirations of the country and the people with trust. The Defence Secretary made this reference giving evidence in the Mount Lavinia Courts in a case filed against the Sunday Leader newspaper. Senior Counsel Ali Sabri further expressing views on the case on behalf of the Defence Secretary said that the case filed by the Defence Secretary against the Sunday Leader newspaper for publishing statements insulting him was taken up for hearing today. The Counsel said the Defence Secretary was present in courts to give evidence. He clarified his political and family background and drew the attention of the Court that they had been elected by the people.
Testifying at length, the Defence Secretary referred to the services discharged by him after being appointed as Defence Secretary to win the war. He referred to the purchase of weapons, the intelligence service and the appointment of homeguards and officials including diplomats to India in this context. Mr. Sabri said that it was under such circumstances that the Sunday Leader newspaper had published statements disparaging him and that he was prepared to give further evidence.
