The President had a special meeting with farmers at Temple Trees. Many problems were sorted out at this meeting. The discussion, organized with the intention ofdrawing up the future vision of the Agricultural sector based on the Mahinda Chinthana Extended Version was attended by 204 farmers representing every Province. The purpose was to discuss the problems of the farmer community and resolve them before the next budget. The farmers had the opportunity of discussing their problems with the President in relation to the agricultural sphere including cultivation of paddy, vegetables, coconut, cinnamon and other crops and also in dairy farming.
The President assured them solutions to many of their problems. Representatives of many Farmer Organisations said they received much relief as a result of the fertilizer subsidy granted by the Government according to a concept of the President. Ministers Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena, Reginald Cooray, Johnston Fernando and Arumugam Thondaman, Deputy Minister W.B. Ekanayake, President’s Secretary Lalith Weeratunge and Ministry Secretaries including Finance Secretary Dr. P.B. Jayasundera were present at this meeting.
