Bike lane proposed across busy Charleston bridge

Charleston-area leaders plan to go to the state Transportation Department later this month with a plan to create a bike lane out of a traffic lane on busy U.S. 17 over a Charleston drawbridge.
A new study suggests the plan is feasible but the state would have to approve the idea.
The bridge now has four northbound traffic lanes. There's no estimate on what the plan might cost but local officials plan to meet with the Transportation Department on Aug 31.
Engineers had earlier concluded it would not be possible to extend a bike path from the side of the bridge. The path is needed because officials say there is really no safe way for bicyclists and pedestrians to get from the West Ashley area of the city to downtown.
