UNP CRISIS DEEPENS

Aug 18, 2011 10:50:20 AM - itnnews.lk

Distorted versions on the UNP are surfacing from within the party itself. Although Party General Secretary Tissa Attanayake announced that the Working Committee yesterday agreed to move forward uniting the party, another group of the party has rejected this statement.

Mr. Attanayake said that on many occasion, accusations were leveled against each other at the meeting of the Working Committee. The Working Committee approved criteria on the procedures of the Working Committee. These were unanimously approved. As such, he said after this meeting no can insult or embarrass the party to form groups to create rifts within the party. He pointed out that Parliamentarian Rosie Senanayake had mentioned that the Working Committee was an illegal body. It was agreed to inquire into the statement made by her and hand over the report to the Working Committee. The UNP General Secretary said that thereafter the Working Committee would examine it.

Mr. Attanayake was addressing the media after last night’s meeting of the UNP Working Committee. However, the Sajith’s faction summoned a news briefing this afternoon and responded to Mr. Attanayake. This faction stated that they do not endorse the Working Committee.

Parliamentarian Rosie Senanayake said she rejected the decisions taken by the Working Committee which was an illegal body. She reiterated that the Working Committee was unconstitutional.

Parliamentarian Thalatha Athukorale said the legality of the present Working Committee was discussed at length. Nothing else was discussed at the meeting as there was an ongoing legal proceeding.

Parliamentarian Buddhika Pathirana said the Working Committee meeting was not a genuine one. He too emphasized that the Working Committee was an illegal body. Holding disciplinary inquiries was not meant to silence them. The intention was to shatter the aspirations of the UNP supporters.
