IMPORT DUTY OF B ONIONS, POTATO AND GARLIC RAISED

The Government has taken several initiatives to protect the local farmer.

The local potato and big onion yields are now entering the market. It will further increase next month. Accordingly, the Government has decided to increase the import tax on potatoes and big onions.
The import tax on kilogram of big onions has been increased by 15 rupees to 25 rupees, while the tax on a kilogram of potatoes has been increased by five rupees to 35 rupees. Also the import tax of garlic has been hiked to 25 rupees to maintain stability in prices in the local market. The Finance Ministry said that these decisions had been taken with the intention of safeguarding the local agricultural industry. 65,000 metric tons of potatoes are expected to reach the market this season. According to statistics, a better big onion harvest is expected from Dambulla and Matale as well as many areas in the North.
