The historic Vavuniya Dalada Perahera took to the streets after a lapse of 31 years.
There were many obstacles to civilian life as well as religious activities in the North for several decades due to terrorist activities. The conduct of the Annual Perahera of the Madukanda Dalada Vihare had to be suspended with the influence of terrorism on Vavuniya. However, the total elimination of terrorism from the country, this year’s Perahera was held on a grand scale last night with state sponsorship.
The Perahera started parading the streets with the laying of the relics casket on the tusker. The Perahera which began from the Sri Bodhi Dakshinarama temple in Vavuniya returned to the historic Sri Dalada Vihare at Madukanda via the Vavuniya. A notable feature was the inclusion of various dances representing all communities. The Perahera was organized under the guidance of the Ven. Muwaetagama Ananda Thera. This is the only Dalada Perahera to be held in the North. According to history, the Sacred Tooth Relics was hidden at the Madukanda Dalada Vihare for several days. As such the Vihare is considered to be a historic location.
