New houses are being provided to the indigenous community safeguarding cultural heritages and identities.
This housing programme is operative with the intention of solving the housing problem of the Indigenous community. A special discussion was held to broach the construction of houses and problems related to this effect. It was presided by Minister Wimal Weerawansa. It was attended by the Veddah Chieftain Uruwarige Wannila Ettho and leaders of Handagala in Polonnaruwa, Vakare, Rathugala in Monegalaga and Henanigala in Ampara. Houses will be come up centering on six villages.
Minister Weerawansa said that the first stage will be launched incurring an expenditure of eight million rupees. He announced that plans had already been drawn up for the implementation of the programme successfully in the next few years at the behest of the President. The support of the National Housing Development Authority and the Construction Training and Development Institute will be obtained for the House Construction Programme. Minister Weerawansa also said that special attention will be diverted uner the first state for the indigenous community of Vakare.
