Database On Medicines And Equipment

Aug 21, 2011 9:49:20 PM - thesundayleader.lk

The Health Ministry is to set up a database at a cost of Rs. 270 million in order to receive accurate details of medicines and equipment required by hospitals in the country.

Health Minister Maithripala Sirisena has said the database would ensure that necessary stocks were available at all times.

This move, he has said would help overcome the problem of drug shortages faced by many hospitals in the country.

The Minister has explained that in some instances medicines in the possession of the Medical Supplies Division does not reach the hospital or ward in need of a specific medicine. Therefore, he has observed that drug shortages were most often caused due to the lack of information regarding the drug stocks.

He has said the project to set up the database would be completed by next year.

Sirisena has said the government needed to put in place an efficient system to ensure there is no wastage of medicines as it spends Rs. 16 billion on medicines and health equipment.
