The elephant census conducted countrywide has concluded. The report on the census is to be released this week.
The island wide elephant census was conducted on the 12th and 13th of this month. The Department of Wildlife Conservation said that plans are afoot to release the report on the census by the end of this week. 4000 officers were involved in this work.
The Peradeniya University is helping in the task of analyzing the statistics of the census. Statistics are being examined for double counting and other issues to ensure the approximate number of elephants in the country.
Wildlife Director General H D Ratnayake, its Deputy Director Dr Pushpa Wijekoon, Prof Santhyapille and several experts are involved in analyzing the statistics collected during the two days.
