Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva is geared to give the due place to Irrigation Engineers. He said that the Government was prepared to utilize the labour of the intellectuals for national development, discouraging them from taking up foreign jobs. The Minister said that officials of the Electricity Board draw a salary more than twice or thrice of that of an Irrigation Engineers. Also those in the highways sector receive higher salaries. These discrepancies should be eliminated. If not it will be difficult to keep the young engineers within the country. They will look for lucrative jobs in other countries. Finally the local projects will have to be implemented with the support of China, India and other countries expending a cost of more than twenty or thirty fold. As such, the Minister said that all those in the Engineering sector should act with some sensitivity.

The Minister was speaking at a function organized to fete officials of the Central Advisory Bureau on Engineering Tasks. 75 officials who had served for more than 25 years were felicitated.
