Aug 22, 2011 11:00:00 AM - thestate.com
Longtime Citadel baseball coach Chal Port died Saturday morning after a long illness. He was 80 years old.

Rene Sistare of the J. Henry Stuhr Funeral Home says Port will be buried on Tuesday.

Port coached the Bulldogs for 27 years. He led them to five NCAA tournament appearances and a surprise berth in the College World Series in 1990, a season before he retired. He won seven Southern Conference baseball championships and won the league's coach of the year honor five times.

Port is a member of the South Carolina Athletic Hall of Fame, the Citadel Hall of Fame and the Charleston Baseball Hall of Fame. He finished with 641 victories and a .624 winning percentage during his run from 1965-91.
