The UNP says the government has failed to reduce the defence costs in the country even two years after the war has ended.
UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayake told a press conference that the government was trying to purchase 14 helicopters on a Russian credit deal when the people were suffering due to a high cost of living.
The government has reportedly ordered 14 Mi-171 helicopters from Rosoboronexport State Corporation under a Russian credit deal.
Attanayake quoted the Air Force Commander, as saying the helicopters would be used for transporting emergency goods, VIPs and for border security.
However, he explained that the people would finally have to bear the burden of the cost as the helicopters are being purchased on a loan.
According to Attanayake, the prices of consumer goods may see a further increase in future.
