Two men wanted in a car theft during which they drove off with a 2-year-old girl have been arrested.
Richland County Sheriff’s Department investigators made the arrests on the basis of DNA evidence in the car they say connects one of the suspects to the July 2 crimes.
Kenyone Octavius Bannister, 23, was arrested Aug. 9 and Demetrius Dwight, 20, was arrested Monday, the department said. Both men are being held at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center, and further arrests could be forthcoming.
The child’s mother reported around 9:55 p.m. July 2 that two unknown men – the woman later said she realized later Bannister was a former classmate – stole her car while she and her husband made a brief stop a relative’s house on Sagemont Drive in Hopkins. The woman’s 2-year-old daughter was in a rear-seat car seat when the men drove off with the car. The child later was found safe in the abandoned car.
The department’s forensics unit was able to match DNA in the car to Bannister.
