S.C. Democrats continued their assault on Republicans Tuesday, releasing documents that show the GOP’s highest elected officials have spent more than $500,000 in taxpayer money giving high-paying state jobs to former campaign staffers.
But, in pointing the finger at Republicans, Democrats also had to answer for their candidates’ past hires. Former Gov. Jim Hodges and Superintendent of Education Jim Rex both gave their former campaign managers $100,000-a-year state salaries.
“If the answer to this is, ‘The Democrats did it, too,’ is that Nikki Haley? She’s going to do whatever the ol’ boys did?” state Democratic Party chairman Dick Harpootlian said. “No, this is somebody that has come forward and said, ‘I’m different. I’m not going to do what they did. I’m not going to be the political hack.’
“She is (a political hack). And the emperor has no clothes.”
Haley defended her staff, telling reporters she was not interested in what Democrats had to say.
