The Sphere Humanitarian Charter and Minimum Standards in Humanitarian Response are a remarkable international initiative aimed at improving the effectiveness and accountability of humanitarian assistance. The Sinhala and Tamil translations of the handbook have been launched.
The launch of the translations took place at the Kadirgamar Memorial Hall under the patronage of Minister Basil Rajapaksa. The Sinhala and Tamil translations of the “Sphere” Handbook were handled by CHA, the Consortium of Humanitarian Agencies. Its Executive Director Jeevan Thyagaraja handed over the first copy of the translation to the Minister. The Handbook contains details of many humanitarian service sectors, including the Humanitarian Charter and Security Ideals. The Sphere handbook is designed for use during humanitarian response in a range of situations, including natural disasters The 2011 Edition of the Sphere Handbook incorporates a stronger focus on the protection and safety of affected populations.
