The country’s first ever National Green Awards ceremony was held under the patronage of President Rajapaksa yesterday. Many environment friendly institutions received Awards from the President.
The Central Environmental Authority of Sri Lanka organized the new national green awards ceremony to recognize the environmental services rendered by production and technical firms. It was held under the patronage of the President to coincide with the 30th Anniversary of the Central Environment Authority. Public and Private Firms which had secured environmental protection permits and making a vital contribution to the protection of the environment were given an opportunity to submit applications. A Panel of judge made the selections from among more than 300 applications. Booodyline (Pvt) Limited, Sri Lankan Catering Katunayake, Heritance Kandalama and Ulagalla Resort Thirppane received Gold Awards from the President. Minister Anura Priyadarshana Yapa gave away Gold Awards to the Kurunegala Udabadalawa Maha Vidyalaya and Maga Engineering Limited. President’s Secretary Lalith Weeratunge and Environment Ministry Secretary Dr. R.H.S. Samaratunge gave away the Silver and Bronze Awards. Geo Cycle Lanka (Pvt) Limited came in for special acclamation by the Central Environment Authority. Chairman of the Central Environment Authority Charitha Herath was among those present.
