Emergency laws removed

Aug 25, 2011 4:39:07 AM - thesundayleader.lk

The government removed controversial emergency laws today, for the first time since it was introduced six years ago.

President Mahinda Rajapakse, making a special statement in parliament said that the emergency regulations will no more be required as there was no terrorism threat to the country anymore.

The Emergency Laws were introduced following the assassination of former Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Lakshman Kadirigamar in August 2005 by Tamil Tiger rebels.

Opposition leader Ranil Wickramasingha told parliament that the decision by the President to remove the emergency laws is a welcome move and called for unity between the opposition and the ruling party to work against “external pressure”.
