UNP says injured FTZ workers yet to get compensation

Aug 25, 2011 3:40:33 PM - www.ft.lk

The main opposition United National Party (UNP) says that employees of the Katunayake free trade zone (FTZ) who were injured in May during a protest against the proposed private sector pensions scheme have not yet been paid compensation.

The UNP says that compensation had not been paid for the damages caused during the clash between the FTZ employees and the police.
UNP Kurunegala District parliamentarian Akila Viraj Kariyawasam has told parliament that some of the injured workers are still seeking medical treatment from hospital and are unable to pay their medical bills.
He has also pointed out that some FTZ workers have been denied salary increments, promotions and overtime.
Meanwhile, DNA parliamentarian Ajith Kumara has questioned the outcome of the report by Mahanama Tillakaratne Commission appointed by President Mahinda Rajapaksa to investigate the incident.  The FTZ employees protesting the proposed private sector pension scheme clashed with the police and in the ensued melee a FTZ worker was killed and over 100 people including 15 police personnel were injured.
