The decision taken by the Sri Lankan Government to remove the emergency regulation that had been in effect in the island continuously for six years has been highly praised by the international community.
Among these the first country to issue a note of accolade over the removal of the emergency regulation was the United States. The US Embassy in Colombo in a released expressed its pleasure at President Rajapaksa’s decision not to extend the emergency regulation after this month.
Britain has welcomed the decision to lift the Emergency. The British High Commission in Colombo said the announcement marks an important move towards normalization and strengthening of civil and political rights.
Another country which has praised the President’s decision to lapse the Emergency is Australia. In a statement, the Australia High Commission said this decision is an important step in reconciliation and normalization after years of conflict in Sri Lanka. It said it is a decision which reflects Sri Lanka’s democratic traditions and hope for the future.
