The largest naval detachment to be set up after completing the humanitarian mission has been established for the security of the North Central sea belt.
The opening of the newly established Naval Base at Nachchikuda took place under the patronage of Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa. It will be mainly used to safeguard the sea belt which is about 90 kilometers from Vedithaltivu to Chalai and for training purposes. The new camp located along the Mannar – Pooneryn road comes under the North Central Command of Sri Lanka Navy. The Base which spans 752 acres is planned to be developed as the North Central Naval College Headquarters. The Defence Secretary also opened the new Naval Commander’s Office. He also took part in a tree planting campaign in parallel to the opening of the Naval Base.
The Defence Secretary and the Group inspected the Hostel, the Hospital, the Kitchen, the Jetty and the agricultural project. Naval Commander Vice-Admiral Somatilake Dissanayake, Chief of Defence Staff Air Chief Marshal Roshan Gunatilake and Area Commander of the North Central Command Rear Admiral Rohan Amarasinghe were present on the occasion.
