Private sector trade union to protest demanding compensation for injured FTZ workers

Aug 26, 2011 3:51:31 PM - www.ft.lk

Colombo: A private sector trade union in Sri Lanka is to stage a protest next Tuesday (30) to call on the government to pay compensation to the Katunayake Free Trade Zone (FTZ) workers who were injured during a protest on the proposed private sector pensions bill.
The Inter Company Employees’ Union (ICEU) affiliated to the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) is to hold the protest opposite the Fort Railway Station at 3 p.m. on 30 August.

ICEU head Wasantha Samarasinghe says that even three months after the death of Katunayake FTZ worker Roshen Shanaka Ratnasekara, the authorities have failed to apprehend the person responsible for his death.

The protest launched by the FTZ workers in May resulted in a clash between the protestors and the police that led to Shanaka’s death and injuries to many others.
Samarasinghe said that although the one-member committee to inquire into the incident was handed over the report to the President, action has not yet been taken.
He says the protest is aimed at urging the government to pay compensation to the injured FTZ workers. (Colombo Page)
