Paddy farmers have complained that the government’s paddy purchasing mechanism did not function properly in some areas.
The farmers of the Mahaweli B in the Polonnaruwa District zone have said that most of their paddy had to be sold to private traders at lower prices than the certified price.
They have reportedly said they were fetching low prices for their Yala harvest and that private traders paid between Rs. 22 and Rs. 23 for a kilo of Nadu due to the failure in the government’s paddy purchasing mechanism.
According to the farmers, the paddy purchasing mechanism was not functioning properly in the Aralaganwila, Arunapura, Divuldamana, Kandegama and Damminna areas.
