Inter Company Employees’ Union (ICEU) is to stage a protest next Tuesday (30) to call on the government to pay compensation to the Katunayake free trade zone (FTZ) workers who were injured during a protest on the proposed private sector pensions bill.
The ICEU will hold the protest opposite the Fort Railway Station at 3 p.m. on the 30th.
ICEU head Wasantha Samarasinghe says that even three months after the death of Katunayake FTZ worker Roshen Chanaka, authorities have failed to apprehend the person responsible for his death.
The protest launched by the FTZ workers in May resulted in a clash between the protestors and the police resulting Chanaka’s death and many others being injured.
Samarasinghe said that although the one member committee to inquire into the incident has handed over the report to the President, action has not yet been taken.
He observes that the protest is aimed at urging the government to pay compensation to the injured FTZ workers.
