Aesthetic education is necessary for creating people not only having intelligence but a sensitive heart as well.
Minister S.B. Dissanayake stated that values are transferred to the next generation through such individuals. He said that the humane and Aesthetic feelings in man makes him a human being. Aesthetics have the power to change social conditions and determine social values. The Minister expressed these views at the convocation ceremony of the University of Visual and Performing Arts held at the BMICH. It was chaired by the Chancellor of the University Dr. W.D. Amaradeva. 720 students who followed courses in art, dace, drama and music obtained degrees. Honourary degrees were bestowed on several scholars in recognition of the service rendered in the fields of arts and literature. Prof. Sunil Ariyaratne, Vajira Chitrasena, Somaratne Dissanayake, W.A. Ariyasena, and Rohana Weerasinghe received the honorary degrees.
