The Air Force says the former commander at a South Carolina base, Brig. Gen. Thomas R. Mikolajcik (Mick-al-EYE-check) has died at his home in Mount Pleasant. He was 63.
The Air Force said in a news release that Mikolajcik died Saturday from complications of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, often referred to as Lou Gehrig's disease.
He was commander of the 437th Airlift Wing in Charleston from 1991 to 1994 and retired to the area two years later.
Mikolajcik graduated from the U.S. Air Force Academy in 1969 and became a command pilot with more than 4,000 hours in a variety of aircraft.
Mikolajcik was diagnosed with ALS in 2003 and became an advocate for those living with the disease. Last year, a new day care center at the Charleston air base was named for him.
