The Health Ministry is to raid unlicensed private pharmacies.
The Ministry said that there are around 3000 private pharmacies in Sri Lanka. They have to be registered annually with the National Cosmetic Devices and Drugs Regulatory Authority. The Ministry said that some of the pharmacies have not been registered so far while some others have not been registered for a number of years. Minister Maitripala Sirisena has instructed the Authority to carry out raids on such pharmacies and take legal action against them. The operations started yesterday. Ten pharmacies in Maradana and Panchikawatta areas in Colombo were raided. Four of them had not been registered. The public has been requested to provide information on pharmacies that do not conform to the regulations with regard to trained pharmacists, storage of drugs and sale of authorized drugs.
