The President’s decision to lift the State of Emergency has earned the acclamation of the European Union. Many countries including the United States, Britain, Australia and India have already praised this initiative. The European Union referred to the significance of the withdrawal of the Emergency which would enable the civilians to live in freedom under the tranquil conditions prevailing in the country following the war which plagued the country for several decades. It said the President’s decision would be a positive beginning for the present as well as the future of the country. Brussels representative Catherine Ashton expressing views on behalf of the European Union opined that restrictions against the civil and political rights, which were essential factors for a democratic society, will thus be eliminated.
