An inmate at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center died last week from a neck injury allegedly caused by officers who restrained him.
The Richland County Sheriff’s Department Thursday opened an investigation into the death of 58-year-old Matthew Green of Columbia, said Deputy Curtis Wilson, a sheriff’s spokesman. The investigation was opened after Richland County Coroner Gary Watts determined Green died of blunt force trauma to his neck.
Green was arrested at 11:18 p.m. Aug. 23 on public intoxication charges by the Forest Acres Police Department and transported to the jail.
While being booked at the jail, Green was restrained by a detention center officer, the sheriff’s department reported.
Green was “put into a head lock — like a full Nelson head lock,” Wilson said.
