Trade unions in the railway sector inSri Lankasay the government stands to lose millions of rupees due to the closure of railway line.
The JVP affiliated Organization for the Protection of the Railway Properties and the Rights of Railway Employees issuing a statement said the government would lose up to Rs. 80 million due to the closure of the railway line between Aluthgama andGallefor a period of six months.
The railway line between Aluthgama andGalleis to be closed from Thursday (September 1) for six months for reconstruction work.
The Organization notes that the reconstruction of the Southern railway line has been handed to an Indian Company under the Indian credit line although the railway department could undertake the project at a lower cost and help the government save a considerable amount of money.
According to the Organization, the Railway Department would lose Rs. 5,150 million with the development work on the railway line fromGalleto Matara being handed over to an Indian Company.
