CIMA to conduct business brief on employer – employee relationship

Aug 30, 2011 4:39:39 PM - www.ft.lk

CIMA Sri Lanka division announces a business brief on ‘Managing employer – employee relations in a competitive environment’.
Employer-employee relationship is a mutually beneficial relationship but is also a delicate one. Successful employer/employee relations involve striking a balance of interests.

From the employer’s point of view, industrial relations is about having the right to manage – the ability to plan for the future so that a company can continue to be a success, to make profits for its shareholders and to keep its employees motivated. From the employee’s point of view, it is all about securing the best possible conditions and living standards for employees.
The speaker will focus on the Sri Lankan context and as to how employer- employee relations have developed over the years with reference to some of the obstacles, challenges and opportunities. The presenter will refer to practical examples in the course of the presentation to explain the issues involved.
He will also suggest a way forward strategy in managing employer-employee relations for Sri Lanka in order to face the challenges in the competitive business environment.
Business Brief speaker Ravi Peiris is the Director General and Chief Executive Officer of Employers’ Federation of Ceylon. He has been directly involved in issues relating to industrial relations and labour law on behalf of employers in Sri Lanka through the Employers’ Federation of Ceylon. He has also been a resource person to the International Labour Organisation at ILO training programmes for employers overseas. He is currently a guest lecturer at the University of Colombo Faculty of Law in respect of the LLM programme and the Postgraduate institute of Management in respect of the MBA programme. He is a member of the National Labour Advisory Council and was the Employer Delegate in the Sri Lankan delegation to the International Labour Conference which was held in June this year. CIMA Business Briefs are evenings programmes conducted regularly on management topics and new developments in the ever changing world of business. Experts in the industry are invited to share their knowledge and experience at these forums.
CIMA Business Briefs are considered an event for knowledge gathering and networking by its members and the business community at large. These briefings are partnered by The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited and Etisalat Lanka (Pvt) Ltd
Presentation on the ‘Managing employer – employee relations in a competitive environment’ is scheduled to be held on Friday 9 September 2011 at the CIMA auditorium.
