An inmate at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center died last week from a neck injury allegedly caused by officers who restrained him.
The Richland County Sheriffs Department Thursday opened an investigation into the death of 58-year-old Matthew Green of Columbia, said Deputy Curtis Wilson, a sheriffs spokesman. The investigation was opened after Richland County Coroner Gary Watts determined Green died of blunt force trauma to his neck.
The detention center officer involved has been suspended without pay while the Richland County Sheriff's Department investigates the death.
Stephany Snowden, a county spokeswoman, would not release the jail employee's name. She said the jail ins conducting an internal administrative review of the death.
"More than 20,000 people are booked into the jail each year and we take seriously our responsibility of caring for them while they are in our custody," Snowden wrote in an e-mail to The State.
