A sewage leak in Cayce prompted city officials to close one of the Columbia-areas most popular parks Wednesday afternoon as utility crews searched for the source of the spill.
City officials decided to shut down Guignard Park as a precaution because sewage had entered a creek that flows through the park. City Manager Rebecca Rhodes said utility crews have rerouted the leaking sewage to the citys wastewater plant.
There should no longer be anything flowing into the creek, she said.
Adam Myrick, a spokesman for the state health department, said people should steer clear of the creek because bacteria levels can soar when a sewage spill occurs. People should also take precautions in the Congaree River near where the creek empties, he said.
Exposure to sewage-contaminated water can give people upset stomachs and other ailments.
