The government has spent Rs. 2,500 million to develop the education sector in the rural areas by upgrading the standards of 1,000 schools in the country.
Education Minister Bandula Gunawardena says the Ministry had identified 55 schools under the 1,000 school development programme and that Rs. 2,500 millions had been spent for their development.
The Ministry has utilized the monies in constructing more schools, laboratories, libraries and water and sanitary facilities, the Minister observes.
According to Gunawardena, development work in almost half of the targeted 55 schools has already been completed.
The development of all 55 schools in the initial phase is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
