Construction work on the Second Stage of upgrading the Southern Railway Express Track gets underway. The Government’s intention is to operate trains at a speed of 100 kilometres per hour on the Colombo-Matara Southern Coastal Rail Track, after its modernization. The Indian Government is extending the necessary assistance for the Project. Under the first, the track from Galle to Matara which is 43 kilometres, was modernized. Under the Second Stage the rail track from Galle to Kalutara was to be modernized. But taking into consideration the difficulties encountered by the public, the Second Stage will be implemented from Gall only up to Induruwa.
Accordingly Railways Planning Director Vijaya Samarasinghe said that trains on the southern rail track will operate from Colombo only up to Alutgama. The Sri Lanka Transport Board will be operating a special service from Alutgama to Galle for the convenience of the public.
