INDIA STEPS UP SURVEILLANCE ON TAMIL REFUGEE CAMPS

Sep 1, 2011 10:47:31 AM - itnnews.lk

With the execution of death sentence of the three condemned prisoners in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case becoming a hot debate topic, the Kerala Police have started conducting thorough surveillance of places where Tamils have settled in large numbers. A special team has been deployed to monitor the Sri Lankan Tamil refugee settlement camp at Gavi in the Pathanamthitta District. The Pathanamthitta District Superintendent of Police K. K. Balachandran said they have been conducting regular surveillance of the refugee camp. A team has been specially deployed at the spot. He said they were closely watching their activities.

The Madras High Court ordered that the three convicts in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case be hanged on the 9th of this month. However the Madras High Court stayed for eight weeks the executions. Reacting to the developments, Janata Party president Subramaniam Swamy appealed to the Prime Minister to move the Supreme Court against the Madras High Court order. Union Law Minister Salman Khurshid said the resolution passed by the Tamil Nadu Assembly seeking amnesty for Rajiv Gandhi’s killers was not binding on anybody.
