Sewage keeps popular Cayce park closed

Guignard Park in Cayce is expected to remain closed through Labor Day weekend because of a sewage leak that dumped wastewater into a creek at the park.
But city officials said they have pinpointed the source of the leak and hope to have repairs to a sewer line made by Saturday morning. The leak was coming from a hole in the side of an aging concrete pipe near Brookland Cayce High School, city manager Rebecca Rhodes said Thursday.
Rhodes said work to fix the leak will start about 11 p.m. today and may result in the closing of one lane of Knox Abbott Drive.
Utility crews have rerouted the leaking sewage to the city’s wastewater plant, meaning the creek no longer is receiving raw sewage.
Rhodes said she does not know how much sewage spilled or how long the leak had been occurring. City work crews discovered the leak while doing other work Tuesday. She was doubtful the city would ever know the extent of the leak, although she said it appeared to be small when discovered.
