Seven was the lucky year. A group of 16 South Carolina state government workers who have been pooling money to buy lottery tickets together since 2004 finally hit a decent jackpot.
The group’s Powerball ticket matched five numbers in the Wednesday drawing, a $200,000 win. After taxes, each member of the group will get $8,500.
Had the players purchased the PowerPlay option, which multiplies earnings for an extra dollar, the winnings would have been $1 million. Still, $200,000 far exceeds their previous best win, $80.
One of the unnamed winners who came to the claims center to collect the prize said she spent Wednesday night on the phone calling her coworkers until midnight, met with a chorus of “I don’t believe it.”
The winners, whose ages ranged from the late 30s to one retiree, gathered Thursday to make plans.
