Sep 2, 2011 7:36:59 AM - itnnews.lk

The Indian Central Government has emphasized that the assassins of former Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi cannot be pardoned.

India’s Home Affairs Minister P. Chidambaram has issued a special statement saying that the most appropriate sentence had been imposed upon the three convicts. He said that the assassins of the Rajiv Gandhi cannot be pardoned. The Indian Minister mentioned that the Indian Central Government did not have the power to change the sentence and that since a Court Case was currently pending regarding the matter he could not comment further regarding the matter.
Mr. Chidambaram pointed out that the Indian Central Government would inform the Indian Court with regards to their stance on the matter.
The Indian Government made this announcement with regard to the proposal by the Tamil Nadu State Government to reduce the sentence of the convicts who were sentenced to death in connection with the Rajiv Gandhi assassination. Recently the Tamil Nadu State Government had ratified a proposal calling for the death sentence on the convicts who were found guilty to be reduced to Life Imprisonment. Accordingly the said proposal had been submitted to the Indian President Prathiba Patel by the Tamil Nadu State Government.
