The Rantembe Reservoir has been drained out for maintenance work. Power generation is halted for a day.
The last occasion the Rantembe Reservoir was drained out in this manner was in 2009. There is a major deposit of mud and sand in the Reservoir following the heavy rain experienced in the catchment area in the past. Action had been initiated to examine the bed of the Reservoir as the Anicut and the Sluice Gates were blocked to some extent by the mud and sand deposits. The clearing of the sand and mud from the Reservoir commenced this morning. Electrical Engineer Indrajith Gallage said that power generation of the Rantembe hydropower plant was temporarily suspended due to the cleaning process. It will return to normality by tomorrow.
