Today is the 145th anniversary of the Police Department.
The Police Department was initiated on 3rd September under the 16th ordinance of 1865. The first Inspector General of Police was Sir Richard Aluvihare who was appointed to the position in 1947. The current IGP is N.K. Illankoon. The insurgencies of 1971 and 1989 brought under control by the Police are considered to be the most serious challenges faced by the Police. Two thousand five hundred and eighty eight Police Officers have sacrificed their lives while on duty. One thousand two hundred and ninety seven have become disabled. Police have rendered considerable service to the people through the commitment of the Police Officers.
