The raids carried out to arrest traders who sell cement at higher prices will be continued.

Minister Johnston Fernando has stated that certain elements are attempting to increase the price by creating an artificial shortage. The Minister expressed these views at a media briefing held in Colombo.

He said that a legal action has been taken against number of traders who sold cement at a higher price. Cement is being used on a massive scale due to development work currently underway. He said that 400,000 tons of cement is required for the purpose. Therefore  2,75,000 tons are required to be imported. India does not have excess stocks due to development activities in the country. It’s only Pakistan that has excess stocks. He said that a conspiracy has been hatched, due to the low price of the Pakistani cement. The Minister said that such activities will not be permitted and legal action will be taken against the culprits.
