The government is to lease out nearly 1000 acres of land at the Trincomalee port to private investors, the Ports Authority said.
Ports Authority Chairman Priyath Wickrama told The Sunday Leader that cabinet approval has already been granted for this move.
He said that open tenders will be called from prospective investors with the focus being on vehicle parts and electronics manufacturers.
A cabinet sub-committee is currently studying the proposals and tenders are likely to be called for by the end of this year.
The Ports Authority Chairman said that some of the funds obtained from giving out the land at the port to investors will be used to repair the damaged jetty.
He said that the move will also draw more attention to the Trincomalee port in the international arena.
