Columbia’s Carter upsets No. 7 seed

Sep 4, 2011 6:50:00 PM - thestate.com
Columbia’s Hayley Carter beat No. 7 seed Montserrat Gonzalez of Paraguay 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 in the first round of the U.S. Open junior girls tournament on Sunday in a match that lasted 2 hours and 23 minutes.

Carter jumped on top early, winning all but one of her first-serve points in the first set to take the lead, before Gonzalez rallied in the second set. The third set lasted nearly an hour by itself with five breaks of serve before Carter got the decisive break.

Carter won despite only serving 36 percent on her first serve and committing 11 double faults. She had an 8-1 edge in aces and 8-1 edge in winners.

Carter’s opponent in the round of 16 is yet to be determined. Gonzalez is the No. 9-ranked junior in the world and reached the Wimbledon junior quarterfinals this summer.
