The Power and Energy Ministry is considering the installation of power plants exclusively for industrial parks and export processing zones.
Power and Energy Minister Champika Ranawaka has said such a move would resolve the rapidly increasing demand for power and minimize the burden on the national grid.
Speaking during a meeting withWesternProvinceindustrialists, Ranawaka has said the Ministry was aware of a certain degree of disruption in supplying electricity to the industrial sector in theWesternProvince.
However, he has added that while 80 per cent of industries in the country are based in thisWesternProvince, the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) and Lanka Electricity Co. (Private) Ltd. (LECO) had given priority to the supply of uninterrupted power to small and medium scale industries.
Therefore, Ranawaka has said the best solution was to set up new power plants for the industrial sector and exporting processing zones.
